Countdown to 2022 Civic Election in BC

With the Labour Day weekend now behind us, the political reality is that we have but a little over a year to go until the next civic election.

The New West Progressives Board of Directors and members of our elector organization have been regularly meeting over the last three years in preparation for the 2022 campaign. This fall the NWP will be holding its 4th Annual General Meeting – the last before the civic election.

The main activity over the coming months for the NWP will be the recruitment and nomination of candidates for the Mayor, Council and School Board positions. It is anticipated the NWP will run a full slate of candidates and a call for candidates was put out last spring via the NWP website. Once the candidates have been chosen in 2022 a campaign platform will be released to the public.

This time around the New West Progressives had four years to prepare for the campaign and there is a real sense that people want positive change in our city

\”COVID has definitely had an impact on our ability to organize community events and face-to-face gatherings over the last 18 months,\” says Daniel Fontaine, President of the NWP. \”That said, we\’ve had to pivot to more online events and the use of technology to keep in touch and prepare for next year\’s election.\”

In the 2018 civic election the NWP ran a total of eight candidates, four for council and four for school board. Danielle Connelly was elected to the School Board, while the remainder of our candidates came very high on the ballot. The New West Progressives topped the polls in Queensborough and came within a few hundred votes of winning a second seat on the School Board.

\”We only had a few months to prepare for the last election as we had just established the New West Progressives in the fall of 2017,\” says Celia Marto, Vice-President and Co-Chair of the Candidate Recruitment Committee. \”This time we\’ll have had four years to prepare for the campaign and there is a real sense that people want positive change in our city.\”

In the 2022 campaign, the NWP candidate lawn signs and branded materials will be sporting a new look with the introduction of a new logo and colour scheme last year. The green and blue theme will be incorporated into the overall campaign and will be popping up on lawn signs all over New Westminster next fall.

\”Our Candidate Recruitment Committee has been busy over the summer fielding expressions of interest from people who want to run with us for various positions,\” says Fontaine. \”There is still plenty of time for people to visit our website and let us know if they want to become a candidate. We\’re looking for individuals who are committed to putting the interests of our city and schools ahead of provincial and federal partisan politics.\”
