Ken Armstrong QC becomes NWP Mayoral candidate

After an extensive search and public advertising campaign last fall, the New West Progressives are pleased to announce that Port Royal resident Ken Armstrong has been chosen as their mayoral candidate for the October 15th municipal election.

Armstrong is an accomplished lawyer and former President of the Canadian Bar Association – BC Branch. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2020.

Away from law, Ken is a committed youth sports volunteer, with over twenty five years of volunteerism as a Little League coach, an accomplished Little League umpire (with two World Series appearances within the Little League system in 2015 and 2016), Little League board member (local league and provincial level), local youth soccer league board member and youth soccer coach (house and select).

\”I\’m very honoured to be representing the New West Progressives as our first-ever mayoral candidate,\” says Armstrong. \”New Westminster is looking for a positive change at city hall this fall and that is exactly what our team will deliver.\”

\”We\’re thrilled to have someone with Ken\’s background and experience leading our team and providing a credible alternative to the current council which is controlled 100% by a single political party,\” says Brian Goss, NWP President. \”New West voters are telling us it\’s time for a change and they want some new faces on council.\”

If elected later this year, local historians indicate Armstrong will become the first ever Mayor or member of council elected from Queensborough.

\”Leaders need to listen, and listen to understand, to be effective,\” says Armstrong. \”That hasn\’t been happening enough at city hall over the past decade. That will be a top priority of mine if I\’m elected as the next Mayor of New Westminster.

\”Mayor Jonathan Cote states one of the main reasons he is quitting is due to the fact his council colleagues are no longer interested in collaboration.  This is a good reason to elect a New West Progressive majority on council. We consider collaboration as a core component of a thriving civic democracy.\”

The New West Progressives will be announcing additional candidates for city council and the school board in the coming months. A comprehensive platform is being developed by the candidates and will be publicly released in advance of the October 15th municipal election.

\”As the Chair of the Nominating Committee I know we\’ve picked a winning candidate in Ken Armstrong,\” says Celia Marto, Vice-President of the NWP. \”There are still a number of positions available if citizens are interested in running with the NWP this fall.  I\’m encouraging people to contact us at info@nwprogressives.ca if they want to become a candidate.
