CIVIC ELECTION INFORMATION SHOULD BE EASILY ACCESSIBLE ON CITY OF NEW WESTMINSTER WEBSITE

New West Progressive council candidate Karima Budhwani is calling on the City of New Westminster to make it easy for residents to get information about the civic election. There is no reference to the civic election on the City of New Westminster’s home page. Residents seeking information about the civic election need to click through to the landing page for City Hall and then scroll down to almost the bottom of the page (just above the last entry which is “Contact Us”) to see the first reference to the civic election.  City of New Westminster stands out among municipalities in the Lower Mainland for its failure to promote awareness of the civic election among its residents. A review of almost every other Metro Vancouver city website confirms they are all featuring the civic election prominently on their home page.

“Along with my candidate colleagues, I am concerned that information about this basic democratic process cannot be easily found on the City’s website.” says Karima Budhwani. “I am calling on the City of New Westminster to rectify this shortcoming and make this information easily accessible to residents. The voter turnout in New Westminster in the 2018 civic election was extremely low. As a result, every effort should be made with only 26 days left until the October 5th advance polls to make sure our city’s homepage prominently encourages people to get engaged and participate in the electoral process.”
