On March 11th the newly elected and expanded Board of Directors will be gathering to discuss the future of the New West Progressives (NWP). The Board will be meeting to begin the development of a 3 year strategic plan as well as start work on increasing opportunities for community and neighbourhood engagement.
\”Unlike the last election where we only had a few months to prepare, we now have four years to plan and get ready for the vote in 2022,\” says Daniel Fontaine, President of the NWP. \”Later this month our Board will be discussing the development of a 3 year strategic plan which we hope will further raise our profile and increase our presence in the community. Given the next election isn\’t for a few more years, this affords us the opportunity to strengthen our civic organization, increase our membership and begin fundraising.\”
The NWP was established in the fall of 2017 and ran eight candidates in the last city and school board elections. NWP candidate Danielle Connelly was elected to the School Board while the council candidates came in 7-10th place.
\”We\’re definitely going to immediately start planning some neighbourhood forums as well as organize a fall fundraiser,\” says Fontaine. \”There is also a lot of interest in continuing to monitor the activities of the District Labour Council Caucus over the coming years as they implement policies that impact residents and business owners. For example, just last week they proposed to raise residential property taxes by a whopping 5.28% this year as well increase sewer, water and utility fees by well more than the rate of inflation.\”
